WHAT IS MERCHANT NAVY ?

The Merchant Navy is a non military economic fleet, which accord with transporting baggage and infrequently, Passengers, through sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of large vessels (ships) such as Passenger vessels, cargo liners which carry cargo or oil tankers as well as other special types of transportation.

Pay Package

In Merchant Navy, the salary can range from anywhere between Rs.12000 to Rs.8 lakhs per month though the pay structure differ from company to company, city to city, the export-import needs, seniority etc. All crew members and officers are given free meals on board and senior officers can take along their wives for the voyage.

A Junior Engineer on a ship can earn around Rs. 30,000 per month with free boarding and lodging while signed on board the vessel. The next level is of Second Engineer and finally, Chief Engineer on a ship. As you keep getting promoted, your salary increases substantially. A Chief Engineer at sea earns Rs. 1.5 lakhs per month or more net of taxes. It takes about 6-7 years for a Junior Engineer Officer to get promoted to the rank of Chief Engineer, depending on individual capabilities and job opportunities available.

A Third Officer's salary is around Rs. 50,000 per month plus free boarding and lodging while on board. Next levels in increasing order of seniority are Second Officer, a Chief Officer and Captain of a ship. A Captain's pay package is Rs. 2 lakhs per month or more net of taxes. It takes about 8 years for a Third Officer to get promoted to the rank of Captain, depending on individual capabilities and the job opportunities available.
Besides this, imported liquor, cigarettes, canned foods, cosmetics are available on board duty free. They are also entitled to four month leave every year. The interesting fact is that there is no income tax return imposed on the earnings of a merchant navy professional.  

Life in merchant navy can be adventurous for all those with wanderlust. The long periods of solitude notwithstanding, the opportunity to see the world and get paid while doing so, just cannot be argued with.

Selection Procedure

Candidates are selected for the B.Sc. Nautical Science degree of TS Chanakya, Mumbai; and the four-year Marine Engineering degree course at Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), in Calcutta and Mumbai, known as DMET, through the Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) followed by personal interviews/counseling, where the interviewers assess the degree of alertness, and awareness of the external environment, in the candidates and their suitability for a career in the Merchant Navy. 

The entry level for a fresh Marine Engineer (ME) is at the rank of fifth engineer or junior engineer and a Nautical Science graduate is as a Deck Cadet. Promotions depend on further examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), the quality of experience and personal merit. On successfully completing these examinations the candidate receives the 'Certificates of Competency' needed for promotion to the respective classes. This examination is conducted by the Ministry of Surface Transport, in association with the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) Mumbai, for determining the promotion prospects for the officers.

Direct entry to Merchant Navy

Direct entry to Merchant Navy is also possible as the students who have completed their 12th with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets and a student holding a bachelor's degree in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Technology Engineering could also join the Merchant navy as a Engine Cadet/ Fifth Engineer/ Junior Engineer. However Direct entry Deck Cadets are required to undergo basic pre-sea training arranged by the employer or recruiting company itself and the direct entry engineering cadets are preferred to do a Pre-sea course of 9 months duration in Marine Engineering conducted by the MERI. 

A career in the merchant navy requires people with strong will and tough physical form, along with adaptive and adjustable attitude as he is supposed to travel frequently throughout the world in different environmental and demographic condition in short span of time.  Besides the candidates need to be quite intelligent, intuitive, willing to work as a team, flexible, patient; have a liking for solitude. Those opting for a career in Merchant Navy should ensure themselves that they are not sea sick. Engineers need to be exceptionally resourceful, practical, and skilled and have in-depth knowledge about the workings of the different machines as they have to work with the available resources on board.  

As far as pay packages are concerned the Merchant Navy employees are one of the highly paid professionals in the industry. The starting salary of the personnel varies between Rs 25,000 to Rs 1,00,000 a month depending upon the company one is working in. Besides monetary remunerations personal of the Navy get a variety of other monetary benefits such as free food, accommodation, paid leave, two-way free passage and facilities for families. In nut shell, the salary can be saved totally while one is on board. All in all one can say that the Merchant Navy employees are suitably paid for the hard life they spend on the ship for the contract period.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA for Merchant Navy

Deck Cadet (DGS + IMU scheme) - leading to B.SC. Nautical science :

Educational qualification: Pass / appearing in 12th class from affiliated universities above 60% in PCM.

Or

With physics as an individual subjects in one of the years of B.SC. In PCM or electronics with an average of above 50% from UGC /DEC recognized university.

Or

B.E./B.TECH degree from college recognized by AICTE.

AND

Should pass English subject above 50 % marks either in 10th or 12th class.

Age: Above 25 years.

Medical: 6/6 eye sight and no color blindness.

B.S. NAUTICAL TECHNOLOGY:

Educational qualification : Pass / appearing in 12th class from affiliated universities above 60% in PCM.

AND

pass English subject above 50 % marks either in 10th or 12th class.

Age: Above 25 years.

Medical: 6/6 eye sight and no color blindness.

Marine Engineering (TME):

Educational qualification: Pass / appearing in 12th class from affiliated universities above 60% in PCM.

AND

Should pass English subject above 50 % marks either in 10th or 12th class.

Age: Above 25 years

Medical: Use of corrective lenses permitted but the maxi. Permissible limits at entry are +_ 2.5 and no color blindness.
