Indian Air Force Airman Exam acronym as IAF Airman Exam is conducted by Central Airmen Selection Board of IAF for unmarried male Indian Citizens to enable them join IAF as Airmen in:
- Group ‘X’ (Technical) Trades or
- Group‘Y’ (Non-Technical) {Except Automobile Technician, GTI, IAF (P) and Musician} Trades or
- in both Groups ‘X & Y’.
Note: IAF Airman Exam is conducted twice in a year generally in the month of April/May and August/September on National level to admit young candidates in IAF as trade Airmen. Due to its National level approach this test is taken by most of the tenth class pass defense services aspirants on the priority basis.

1. Educational Qualification
For Group ‘X’ (Technical)
- Passed Intermediate/10+2/ Equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and English with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English. OR
- Passed three years Diploma Course in Engineering (Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Automobile /Computer Science / Instrumentation Technology / Information Technology) from a Government recognized Polytechnic Institute with 50% marks in overall aggregate, and 50% marks in English in Diploma or Intermediate/Matriculation, if English is not a subject in Diploma Course.
For Group ‘Y’ (Non-Technical)
- Passed Intermediate / 10+2 / Equivalent Examination in any stream/subjects approved by Central / State Education Boards with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50%marks in English. OR
- Passed Two years Vocational Course affiliated/recognized by CBSE /State Education Boards / Councils duly recognized at par with 10+2 by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English in Vocational Course or Intermediate/Matriculation, if English is not a subject in Vocational Course.
For Both Groups ‘X & Y’ (Eligible for both Technical and Non-Technical)
- Candidates possessing educational qualification as given above. (Candidates will take the examination for Group ‘X’ and Group ‘Y’ subjects in one sitting and can qualify for Group ‘X’ and Group ‘Y’ or both i.e. if candidate passes in English and Reasoning & General Awareness (RAGA), then he will be considered pass in Group ‘Y’ and if he passes in English, Physics and Maths, he is considered pass in Group ‘X’. If a candidate clears in all the four subjects, he will be considered pass in Group ‘X’ and Group ‘Y’.)
Note:- Boards recognized/affiliated by Council of Boards for Secondary Education (COBSE) will only be permitted. NOTE - 2. Exact aggregate percentage of marks up to first place of decimal for all subjects as mentioned in the Mark Sheet of Intermediate/10+2/equivalent/Diploma (For example, 49.9% should NOT be rounded off to 50%)
2. Age Limits
Aspiring candidate should be between 16 years to 19 years.
3. Nationality
A candidate must either be:
1. a citizen of India, or
2. a subject of Bhutan, or
3. a subject of Nepal, or
4. a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
5. a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Certificate of
eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are
Gorkha subjects of Nepal.
4. Marital Status
Unmarried Indian citizens are eligible.
5. Physical Standard
1. Minimum Height: 152.5 cm.
2. Chest Expanded chest measurement should not be less than 75 cm with minimum range of expansion of 5 cm.
3. Weight: Corresponding to height and age.
4. Vision : At least 6/ 12 in each eye without glasses or 6/6 in better eye and 6/36 in the worse eye without glasses, correctible to 6/6 in each eye with glasses.
5. Normal hearing.
6. General Health: Free from all communicable diseases and cardiovascular, medical or surgical deformities or infection.

IAF Airman Exam Pattern |
The question paper will be bilingual, consisting of the objective questions in above given two parts. The candidates will be required to qualify each part separately. Results will be declared on the same day and the successful candidates have to immediately appear in a Trade Allocation Test.

How to apply for IAF Airman Exam ? |
Aspiring candidate can apply on A-4 Size paper only as per the approved format. Old pattern of Application will not be accepted. The following are to be sent along with the application:-
For Group ‘X’ (Technical) Trades :
1. Attested photocopy of Matriculation Passing Certificate in support of Date of Birth.
2. Attested photocopy of Matriculation Marks Sheet (only applicable for Diploma Holders when English is not a subject in Diploma Course).
3. Attested photocopies of Intermediate/10+2/Equivalent Marks Sheet and Passing Certificate or Marks Sheets and Passing Certificate of all the semesters of Three years Diploma Course.
For Group ‘Y’ (Non-Technical) Trades
1. Attested photocopy of Matriculation Passing Certificate in support of Date of Birth.
2. Attested photocopy of Matriculation Marks Sheet (only applicable for Vocational Course Holders when English is not a subject in Vocational Course).
3. Attested photocopies of Intermediate/10+2/Equivalent Marks Sheet and Passing Certificate or Marks Sheets and Passing Certificate of Two years Vocational Course.
For Both Groups ‘X & Y’.
1. Common of above
- Three copies of unattested recent (taken on or after 06 September 2014) passport size COLOUR PHOTOGRAPH (front portrait without headgear except for Sikhs), ONE of which is to be pasted on the application form and the other two are to be stapled to the top left corner of the application form. THE PHOTOGRAPH IS TO BE TAKEN WITH CANDIDATE HOLDING A BLACK SLATE IN FRONT OF HIS CHEST WITH HIS NAME, DATE OF BIRTH AND DATE OF PHOTOGRAPH CLEARLY WRITTEN ON IT WITH WHITE CHALK IN CAPITAL LETTERS. Photographs should be only on good quality of “Photo Paper” (Six photographs will be required duringtest).
- Son of Air Force Personnel (SOAFP)/Discharge Certificate (if applicable) is to be attached with the application.
- One self-addressed 24 cm x 10 cm WHITE ENVELOPE of good quality, stapled/pinned with the application form.
