Marine Radio Officer (MRO) also called as Radio officer is the professional on board a ship who handles the vital function of radio communications for the ship. Eligibility to become a Radio Officer
1. Educational Qualification
The minimum educational qualifications for pursuing a Marine Radio Officer (MRO) course the aspirant should be at least plus two or equivalent with Preferably science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
The candidate must have attained the age of 17 years on 1st July of the year of examination
The upper age limit is also relaxed in favor of certain categories of employees working under the Government of India and Defense Services Personnel.
3. Physical Standard:
- The minimum height should be 150cms with correlated weight and proportionate chest with minimum 5-cm expansion.
- He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no color blindness.
How to become a Radio Officer ?
The aspirants has to take up the Marine Radio Officers Course. These courses in ROGC, COP, RTG, RTR, RTIM are internationally recognised. Examinations for these courses are conducted by the Ministry of Communications, Government of India.
Besides, there is also the Ham (Amateur) Radio Operators License to be worked for.
There are other courses, too, such as the Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems (GMDSS) and Marine Electronics course.

Radio Officer Salary
